Make your own garden! Each child personalized their own flower as we discussed spring.

Spring is here. As the flowers begin to bloom, each of the children created their own flowers. We had a beautiful garden at the end of our session.

This activity targets labeling colors, increasing vocabulary, categorizing, requesting, and following directions.

Materials:

Pipe cleaners

Paper

Felt

Glue Gun

Markers/crayons

1) Read a story book such as "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" by Eric Carle or "My Spring Robin" by Anne Rockwell, Harlow Rockwell, and Lizzy Rockwell. If you don't have a book, take a walk outside. Then review spring vocabulary. Talk about the changes you see this season.

2) Draw and cut out a flower from a piece of paper.

3) Have each child select the color pipe cleaners they would like to use to decorate their petals. Depending on their age you may want to model the color label for them. Always remember to keep your child's language level in mind and expand on it. (e.g. if he/she speaks in 1-word utterances use 2-words instead "want Blue").

4) Once they have selected their pipe cleaners, have your children draw one item for each petal that comes to their mind when they think of spring. For older children, have them formulate a sentence or use a variety of descriptive words to describe what spring means to them.

5) Next ask your child to bend the pipe cleaner so as to wrap them along the petals to create a border. You may need to model/help them with this piece.

6) Glue the pipe cleaners along the petals.

7) Cut out a yellow circle piece of felt.

7) Glue the piece of felt in the center of your flower to indicate the seeds. My clients decorated it by making it a smiley face.

8) Stop and smell the flowers! Enjoy your beautiful garden!
